Synecdoche New York

There's no denying that Charlie Kaufman is a talented and creative filmmaker.  His work, however, can be an acquired taste, and more often than not, is a bit hit-or-miss.  Synecdoche New York is fairly representative of much of his other work, although this story tends to be a bit more bleak than something like "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"  SNY is infused with quirky mixture of dark fantasy and absurdism that juxtaposes itself against the stifling reality of its main character, Caden Cotard.

Synecdoche, New York is the kind of film that becomes a darling of film societies and festivals.  If you love movies that are character driven, and short on plot, it won't disappoint.  Kaufman loves to push the boundaries of style and form.  However, for mainstream movie fans, this will be a real yawner.
