State of Play

State of Play is one of those movies that has a perfect balance of intelligent, thought provoking story, and outright entertainment.  From the first 10 minutes of the movie I was hooked, and although it is over 2 hours long, the pacing was intense enough to keep my interest the entire way.

The movie actually reminded me of some of the movies based on John Grisham books in the late 90’s (Pelican Brief, A Time To Kill).  If you’re at all a fan of these types of movies, then State of Play should be one you’ll like as well.

Russell Crowe seems to always turn in a solid performance, and this one is no exception.  He actually plays against type a bit, taking on the role of a jaded shlub of a journalist, rather than the cold as ice hero.

Although audiences shied away from this one at the box office, it’s a perfect rental movie.  I can’t imagine too many people being disappointed with it.
